Spinal Cord Injury

Being the victim of an injury to your spinal cord is a serious matter, and it will leave you with a lifetime of personal and financial struggles and medical expenses. No spinal cord injury is considered “minor,” however, the extent of the damage to your spine and the rest of your body largely depends on where you were injured and how badly.

Consequences of spinal cord injuries can include but are not limited to:

  • Paraplegia
  • Quadriplegia
  • Loss of sensation in the skin
  • Loss of bodily functions (bladder/bowel control)
  • Loss of sexual function (impotency/erectile dysfunction)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Muscle spasms
  • Chronic pain
  • Inability to regulate circulatory system and blood pressure
  • Emotional and psychological trauma

Unfortunately, there is no cure for spinal cord injuries. Some repairs may be able to be made to the surrounding tissues, but by and large, medical care for a spinal cord injury involves little more than extensive physical therapy to adapt to your new limitations. This could include modifications to your home, medical assistance at home, or wheelchairs.
